Health and Dental Insurance Plans for Graduate Students

The GSA offers medical and dental insurance plans designed to be relatively comprehensive and low in cost. The plans are offered in conjunction with CUSA, thereby allowing graduate students to benefit from being part of a larger pool. All full-time students registered in the Fall Term, including international students, are automatically covered by the plan. Students who register as full-time in the Winter or Summer terms are not automatically covered, but may opt into the plan. Part-time students are not automatically covered, but may opt into the plan. Co-op students are subject to the same rules as part-time students. If your co-op is in the Fall Term, you will need to opt in to the health plan. Students also have the ability to opt-in spouses (including common-law and same-sex spouses) and children. Those students with equivalent or greater coverage with another plan can opt-out.

The GSA plan, which is run through the National Student Health Network, provides a number of student-friendly options. Students can use their Carleton ID card at participating pharmacies and dentists’ offices across Canada to pay only the deductible for their prescription or dental service.

A comprehensive information booklet is available in our offices, on the sixth floor of the Unicentre, or to download below. On our site, you can also find forms for opting in or out and claiming dental benefits or prescription drug benefits.

Please feel free to contact CUSA, who administer the plan, at 613-520-6688 if you have any questions. Our insurance provider also has detailed information available for students: go to heath.ca (yes, heath, not health!) and follow the “universities” link to the Carleton page.
