GSA Council

What is Council?

The Graduate Students' Association council is made up of representatives from each graduate department, school and institute. The council is the legislative authority of the GSA and has the final word on all matters. Council provides direction for the executive. Every department with more than twenty-five full-time graduate students has two seats on the council; smaller departments have one seat.

How can I get involved?

Do you want to represent your department at GSA council? To become a councillor, a nomination form needs to be completed. See the Council Nomination Forms section below.

If there are more candidates than seats for any department, then the students of that department hold an election to choose their representative on council.

If you would like to attend a GSA Council meeting to see what it's all about, consult the schedule on this page for dates and locations. Observers may be present for all business (with the exception of the rare times when council goes "in camera") and may speak as well, though they may not vote.

For more information contact the VP Operations or stop by the GSA office.

Why is it important to get involved?

• GSA council represents all students enrolled in the Faculty of Graduate and Post Doctoral Affairs – to do this properly it is essential that students from every department have their perspectives, ideas and concerns represented.

• Sitting on the GSA Council provides great experience – learn how a non-profit democratic organization works. Councillors get to know how the university works and what graduate students at other universities are up to.

• It's fun – Council is a great way to meet people across disciplines and get involved in the graduate student community at Carleton.

What type of time commitment is required?

The basic time commitment is one meeting per month. Beyond this, there are various council committees that councillors may work on, including the Scholarship and Awards Committee, the Organisational Review Committee, the Accessibility Committee, and the Political Advocacy Committee.
