Travel Grant

Over the years, the GSA travel grant has become one of the most popular programs we offer. Travel grants help graduate students defray the costs of participating in academic conferences or engaging in academic pursuits, including research, outside of the Ottawa area. Unfortunately, it must be understood that the GSA has limited funds available for travel grants. Students applying for a travel grant must provide documentation proving that they've also applied to their supervisor, their department, and the Faculty of Graduate and Post Doctoral Affairs.

Travel grants may assist students in a number of ways. A travel grant is available to any graduate student who is presenting a paper, chart, poster, or any other form of academic work (including being a scheduled participant on a panel) at a recognised conference. The grant can also assist students who wish to attend conferences directly related to their research topic, compete in academic competitions, or conduct research relating directly to their research topic.

The GSA shall award 50% of the travel costs not covered by other sources, to a maximum of $200.00. The minimum cost (to the student) must exceed $50.00. Candidates are entitled to apply for more than one grant per fiscal year (01 May to 30 April), where the total of all grants awarded to any one candidate will not exceed the maximum award per applicant in one fiscal year ($200.00). The travel grant shall not be awarded to assist students' travel for internships or co-ops, paid or otherwise. The Vice President Finance shall be responsible for approving all travel grants.

More detailed information is available in our policies section.

Application forms are available at the GSA office or can be downloaded below.

Dental Grant

The dental grant is designed to assist graduate students in off-setting the cost of any urgent and necessary dental repairs or other dental services, which are covered at less than 50% by the GSA's dental insurance plan. It was created with the understanding that graduate students often are faced with significant expenses due to unforeseen dental emergencies.

The dental grant may be awarded up to a maximum of $500 per student (including dependent(s) as defined under the GSA's dental insurance plan) each policy year. The amount awarded will not exceed 50% of the graduate student's total dental expenses, including the portion reimbursed under the dental insurance plan.

Detailed information about this program can be found in our policies section.

Application forms are available at the GSA main office, or can be downloaded below.

Emergency Grant

The GSA emergency grant of up to $250 is designed to assist graduate students in dire financial need due to unforeseen circumstances, such as illness, fire, theft, or family emergency. The GSA Emergency Grant is not a loan, and thus need not be repaid.

Applicants must provide the following information: reason(s) for application; budgetary outline of applicant, including income and expenses; detailed information concerning the anticipated use of any potential grant by the applicant; any relevant documentation pertaining to the emergency; and a list of other organisations or bodies to which the applicant has made requests for funds, including details of any funds attained or reasons given for the denial of funds.

Detailed information about this program can be found in our policies section.

Application forms are available at the GSA main office, or can be downloaded below.

Accessibility Grant

Since 1992, the GSA Accessibility fund has provided funds to pay for attendant care for grads with disabilities at GSA functions or at other academic events where such care is not covered by other organisations, and funds for projects which improve the accessibility of facilities grads use at Carleton.

An application form for these funds can be picked up at our offices, or downloaded below.
